Derrick Greaves established hmself in the mid 1950s as a "kitchen Sink" painter. Although this was only a very brief moment in his long career it was marked by international acclaim at the Venice Biennale in 1956, and numerous acquisitions by museums. Works from this period, outside museums, are comaprtively rare. Domestic scenes are generally of the artist's wife and very young children as in the present painting.
