A bus system was organised to transport elderly people to the potato patches, 2 kilometres away from The Settlement. The bus shelter sits adjacent to the Hottentot* Gulch, named in honour of the Hottentot Artillery Drivers. (The name Hottentot originates from the Dutch nickname for the Khoikhoi tribes of Southern Africa, meaning to stutter, in imitation of the 'clicks' that characterise the Khoekhoe language. Today the term 'hottentot' is considered derogatory.
