Sir Anthony Caro has played a key role in the development of twentieth century sculpture; producing works in bronze, steel and aluminium.
After studying sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools in London, he worked as an assistant to Henry Moore. He came to public attention with a show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1963, where he exhibited brightly painted, large abstract sculptures which stand directly on the ground so that they engage the spectator on a one-to-one basis. This modernist radical approach to sculpture paved the way for future developments in three-dimensional art.Since 1960 Caro has worked on bolted and welded steel and aluminium sculptures. His teaching at St Martin's School of Art between 1953 and 1981 was extremely influential.
