The present work, characteristic of a number of late pictures by Kertész, where he appears to look back with nostalgia. In this case, there are clear echoes of the facades and doorways of Eugene Atget, as well as references to Kertész's own photograph of shop windows. The French context is further consolidated by the glimpse of Nadar's celebrated photograph of Balzac through the window.
The resulting image also suggests the legacy of Surrealism in its truest form, as an art based on a heightened sense of reality in which the marvellous was to be encountered on the streets of Paris.
