Founded in 1999, James Hyman Gallery specialises in twentieth-century British art, with a particular focus on post-war painting and the School of London. Over more than twenty-five years, the gallery has built a reputation for connoisseurship, scholarship, and sustained engagement with the artists who have shaped British art in the modern era.
Led by Dr James Hyman, the gallery brings together art-historical expertise and deep market knowledge. A graduate of the Courtauld Institute of Art, James received his PhD for doctoral research that was later published as The Battle for Realism. Figurative Art in Britain during the Cold War (Yale University Press, 2001). This scholarly foundation continues to inform the gallery’s approach to exhibitions, advisory work, and sales.
After more than twenty years in Mayfair and St James’s, James Hyman Gallery now focuses on private dealing, art fairs, and advisory services for collectors and institutions in the UK and internationally, guiding acquisitions, collection development, and the placement of significant works.
Beyond the gallery, James and Claire Hyman have assembled one of the most significant collections of British photography, presented publicly through The Hyman Collection. In 2020 they established the The Centre for British Photography, a registered charity that supports photographers in Britain through exhibitions, events, grants, and mentoring.
Together, these parallel initiatives reflect a broader commitment to scholarship, collecting, and public engagement, and reinforce the gallery’s position as a trusted authority for collectors and institutions.
