Literature: William Turnbull: Heads and Figures 1953 - 56: Rare works on paper from a private collection, James Hyman Gallery, London, 2004, (cat. 14), back cover (p.12).
This monoprint is unique. It was made by applying paint to a sheet of glass and then pressing the paper against the glass.
The image of a woman closely realtes to a work in the same medium in the collection of the Tate Gallery and in each case the image was inspired by a short film that Turnbull made in 1951. Entitled 83B, a reference to a house in xx, this film was made in collaboration with Alan Forbes. Crudely cut, this eleven minute film recorded the shadows cast by Turnbull's sculptures against a wall, accompanied by a soundtrack of slowed down sound.
We are grateful to William Turnbull for his help in cataloguing this work.
