Exhibitions: Violence and Sensation, James Hyman Gallery, London, 5 September - 4 October 2008.
A disembodied arm hovers midair, fingers in the motion of stretching out towards something unseen. Bevan developped this unnerving form of psychological portraiture during the 1980s and 1990s, eventually leading to his Heads series that referenced motifs by Bacon.
Here, the visual contrast is increased by the bold use of colours, the dominant black and swathe of red, upon which the outstretched arm lingers.
