Linda McCartney established her reputation in the 1960s as a photographer of rock stars. Following her marriage to Paul McCartney her photographs became more intimate and experimental. As Paul McCartney has written: "the photographs not only illustrate her incredible talent as an artist, but as someone who was very much connected to the culture of the times, and wasn't afraid to challenge herself or her subject."

In 2008 James Hyman Gallery worked with Paul McCartney and Mary McCartney to stage a major retrospective of Linda McCartney's photographs from the 1960s to the 1990s, which received world-wide acclaim.
