Hughie O'Donoghue (b.1953) Aqueduct Graphite Cloud
Charcoal on paper 118.7 x 203.2 cms (46¾ x 80 inches) 1987
The massive charcoal drawing Aqueduct is based on two separate images - the ancient Roman Aqueduct, The Pont du Gard in Provence and the grainy newspapers images of the disintegrating chernobyl reactor which were in the newspapers and on the television at the time the drawing was being made. The light in this drawing is characteristic of works from this period made by the pressure of a wide plastic erasers which to some extent dissolves th image.
