On the reverse of the original frame for this major drawing is a label, presumably in the artist's own handwriting: "18. Lady with a Lute Richard Eurich 19 Coleherne Road SW10". Below this there is a typed label for the Goupil Gallery, so presumably the work was shown in Eurich's famous first exhibition.
This drawing is exceptional large and detailed. It shows a woman standing holding a musical instrument in the lute family. The instrument has been identified as a theobo.
The music on the book shelves has identifiable text on the spines and includes:
Top Shelf: Thomas Mace, Christopher Simson
Middle Shelf: Downland, Robert Jones, John Daniel, Ford, Corkine, Pilkington, Grove
Bottom Shelf: Lassus, Bull, Byrde, Gibbons, Welkes, Purcell (King Arthur), Wilbye, Parthenia, Blow, Greene Croft.
The picture on the wall is of John Downland 1563 - 1626.
James Hyman Gallery has lent this work to the following exhibition:
'Richard Eurich (1903-1992) Visionary Artist', Millais Gallery at the Southampton Institute, Southampton, March 13 - April 28 2003.
