Born in Berlin.

1939
Sent by his parents to school in Kent to escape the war, and subsequently lost contact with them.

1947
Played some small roles at London theatres. Took painting classes at the Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute.

1948
Attended David Bomberg’s drawing classes at the Borough Polytechnic Institute, prior to entering St. Martin’s School of Art. (continued to take David Bomberg’s drawing classes at the Borough Institute until 1954).

1952
Royal College of Art where fellow students included Bridget Riley and Leon Kossoff.

1954
Acquired Gustav Metzger’s former studio in Camden.

1955
Graduated from the Royal College of Art with a silver medal and first-class honours.

1958
Marriage to Julia Wolstenholme and birth of his son Jacob.

1966
Began a series on the Camden Palace Theatre.

1986
Selected for the British Pavilion at the XLII Venice Biennale, winning the Golden Lion Prize along with Sigmar Polke.

2000
The newly-opened Tate Modern devoted a room to his works.
