Photo London 2021

Somerset House, 8 - 12 September 2021
Stand B5 (East Wing)

James Hyman Gallery is delighted to return to Somerset House for Photo London. Our presentation will focus on the London premiere of Heather Agyepong's recent series Wish You Were Here, special exhibition prints by Helen Sear and a curated selection of vintage photographs by Cecil Beaton, Andre Kertesz, Man Ray, Ilse Bing, Charles Negre, Ruth Orkin, Julien Vallou de Villeneuve and Edward Steichen.

Heather Agyepong
This will be the London premiere for Heather Agyepong's latest series, Wish You Were Here (2020). Following the success of her earlier series Too Many Blackamoors, the images explore the concepts of ownership, entitlement and mental well-being. The series was commissioned by THE HYMAN COLLECTION and earlier this year featured in the exhibition A Picture of Health at Bristol's Arnolfini.

Helen Sear
Helen Sear's recent series Wild Flower Arrangments was recently featured in a prestigious exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery. Unearthed: Photography's Roots examined the rich history of the medium through images of nature.

Vintage Photographs
In addition to recent works by Heather Agyepong and Helen Sear, our vintage highlights include a beautiful selection of portraits: a very rare paper negative by Vallou de Villeneuve, a sensitive double-mounted untrimmed portrait of a young girl by Edward Steichen and a vintage print by Cecil Beaton of Giacometti in his studio, as well as an extraordinary vintage Man Ray of Nine Members of the Surrealist Group. We also have a remarkable group of street scenes ranging from Charles Negre's famous view of Grasse to an Andre Kertesz carte postale of Montmartre, an Ilse Bing and an early print of Ruth Orkin's most famous photograph, American Girl in Italy. Finally, we are delighted to include an exceptional print of Steichen's celebrated Heavy Roses which was formerly in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
