A powerful drawing that richly conveys the massiveness of the hillside, Grazalema well illustrates the stimulus that Edward Middleditch received from the paintings and drawings of David Bomberg.
Following the rehabilitation of Bomberg, after his death, many young artists of the late 1950s were encouraged to produce expressive paintings and dense charcoal drawings.
In Middleditch's case there was also the direct stimulus of his travels in Spain where Middleditch visited many of the same places that Bomberg had depicted.
Frame included.
