Robert Medley met his partner, dancer, choreographer and theatre director, Rupert Doone, in 1926 with whom he spent the rest of his life with.
Doone danced in Diaghilev's Ballets Russes which revolutionised early 20th-century arts. At the pinnacle of his career in 1930, Doone had solo roles in two major ballets, Cimarosiana and Le Mariage d'Aurore.
Together, Doone and Medley founded the Group Theatre in 1931 and Medley designed sets and costumes for most of Doone's productions.
