Le Dien was one of the Gustave Le Gray's greatest students.
These exceptionally rare works are principally of Italian views around Rome, Naples and Pompeii. The finest are evidently printed by Gustave Le Gray and often have a joint credit as with the blind stamp on this picture.
The House of the Faune (Casa del Fauno) was first excavated in 1830. It was built during the 2nd century BC and was one of the most impressive and luxurious private residences in Pompeii.
