A Collage Aesthetic in Post War British Art

28 March - 13 May 2023
After the Second World War the legacy of the Surrealists and the pioneers of Pop Art placed collage at the centre of their practice. This would lead to a new aesthetic that engaged with past and present and high and low art. It witnessed an engagement with the imagery of celebrity, fashion and consumerism and also impact the practice of painters who incorporated collage onto their canvas.
The exhibition includes one of Peter Blake's greatest assemblages, his huge Shrine to Marilyn Monroe, a very rare double-sided screen by Nigel Henderson and works by Edouardo Paolozzi, Colin Self, Michael Ayrton and Derrick Greaves.
