Andrews was an accomplished watercolorist from a young age, prefiguring the importance he would attach to the medium in his later works such as thoses depicting a wschool of fish and Scottish landscapes. The present watercolour is typical of his work done in Norfolk, prior to arrival in London to attend the Slade School of Art.

Andrews early watercolours often show rural setting near his childhood home in Norwich. This watercolour is situated just outside Andrews home in Norwich.

From an early age Andrews was aware of the Norwich school of landscape painters. This major regional school of landscape painting dates from 1803 when, John Crome and others formed the Norwich Society, initially as a self-help discussion group for 'an Enquiry into the Rise, Progress and present state of painting with a view to point out the best methods of study to attain to Greater Perfection.' Its leading figure was John Sell Cotman. Their low-key realism was inspired by the Norfolk broads and river.
