Horatio Ross (1801-1886) was a landed gentleman regarded for his excellent sportsmanship and marksmanship. He and his family took part in the annual rifle competitions at Wimbledon and were highly recognized for their talent. His legacy is preserved through his equally strong talent for photography which he took up in the mid-1840s.
Ross was a founding member of the Photographic Society of Scotland, of which he later became President. His images illustrate the Scottish and Highland Country side, but also feature unique portraits of his social circle, including images of his family engaging in pastimes of the upper class in 19th Century Scotland. He and his sons were also photographed by the artist Roger Fenton.
