Louis De Clercq French, 1837-1901

Louis Constantin Henri François Xavier De Clercq, who was born in Paris in and died in Oignies in 1901, was a French industrialist, photographer and politician.

Born into a wealthy French family, he was from a young age impassioned by archaeology and photography. In 1859, he was able to travel to Syria with the archeologist Emmanuel Guillaume Rey to study the ancient buildings. After a few months working together, De Clercq quit the mission and continued his journey, photographing Jerusalem, Egypt and Spain before returning to France.
