Photographs by Bacot are exceptionally rare.
Little is known about Bacot and few works appear to survive. Those that do survive reveal one of the most interesting early photographers. Working on a small scale, Bacot's intimate landscapes of Normandy and revealing portraits have a power that belies their modest dimensions.
Portrait of a Woman is not only exceptional for its strong tones and beautiful blue-black colouring but is also a sensitive study of old age, an insight into an individual and an encapsulation of a particular social class.
