This tapestry is a unique test section for the famous tapestry by R.B. Kitaj in the atrium of the world-renowned British Library in Kings Cross.

At 7m square, when completed the tapestry was the largest hand-woven tapestry in the world and was made by the celebrated Master Weavers of the Dovecot Tapestry Studio.

The tapestry was commissioned from Kitaj, one of the major figures in British painting since the 1960s, by the great architect and art collector, Sir Colin Wilson, who was the architect of the British Library. It shows a landscape that is taken from Kitaj’s most famous painting, If Not, Not, which is in the collection of The National Galleries of Scotland.

In preparation for the huge final tapestry Dovecot Studios made a unique one metre version that shows a section of the painting. This was approved by Kitaj and retained by Colin St John Wilson. It was sold by his Estate.
