These beautiful works by Ingres have an exceptinal provenance coming from Weston Hall the home of the illustrious SItwell family.

Weston Hall stands as a testament to one of Britain’s most remarkable literary dynasties, the Sitwell family. For centuries, it served as both a home and a reflection of their creative and intellectual spirit, housing generations of writers, artists, and thinkers whose influence reached deep into British cultural life. The Sitwells - among them the celebrated siblings Edith, Osbert, and Sacheverell - played a central role in shaping twentieth-century literary and artistic circles, challenging convention and helping to define the modernist movement.

The house itself embodied the evolution of British society. Within its maze of rooms and attics lay evidence of the family’s eccentric brilliance: manuscripts, letters, and portraits that traced not only their story but the broader history of art, literature, and taste from the eighteenth century onward. Weston Hall’s library held volumes by the Sitwells alongside works by writers such as Milton, while its walls displayed portraits by figures including Thomas Lawrence and Cecil Beaton.

Through their writing, patronage, and unconventional lives, the Sitwells became icons of modern British culture. Weston Hall, preserved through generations, stands as a living archive of their legacy - a place where the story of British literature, society, and artistic innovation continues to resonate.

The four lithographs are made by Ingres but printed in 1818-27 by Charles Joseph Hullmandel, lithographer in London.

The
subjects are Lord and Lady Glenbervie, their son, Frederic,
and Lady Glenbervie's brother, all of whom were
drawn in Rome in 1815. The original drawings were
then used by Hulmandel to produce the lithographs.
