Of all early photographers, Vallou de Villeneuve stands out in the closeness of his work to painting conventions. He began as an artist and printmaker and he frequently created tableau in his studio that recreate paintings. In the present work he even seems dissatisfied with the monochromatic nature of early photography and has totally painted over his paper negative.
