This enormously enlarged photograph was included in the highly influential exhibition Parallel of Life and Art, ICA, London, 1953. Conceived as a collaboration between artists (Eduardo Paolozzi, Nigel Henderson) and architects and critics (Peter and Alison Smithson, Reyner Banham), this radical exhibition emphasised the importance of photography, mass-produced imagery, architecture and design to avant-garde art. Its combination of Western and non-Western sources, art and science, and high and low culture was a foundation of British Pop Art.
